Built from love, worry, and one very important cat

Specifeed is a specialist pet food search engine — built because finding the right diet should not feel like detective work.

Specifeed (specifeed.co.uk) is an independent online tool: a special-diet pet food finder and comparison site. We help owners search veterinary-style and specialised diets, then compare packs, prices and stock from retailers. We do not make pet food, we do not fill prescriptions, and we are not the SPECIFIC veterinary diet brand.

This site began with a horrible realisation: the food I was lovingly putting down every day, thinking I was caring for my own bundle of joy, was part of what was making him suffer. For months he went through hell. I watched, worried, changed routines, searched symptoms, asked questions, and carried that heavy owner guilt that arrives when you realise the answer may have been sitting in the food bowl.

What Specifeed is

  • A free specialist pet food search engine and comparison website
  • Focused on specialised / veterinary-style diets (renal, urinary, hydrolysed, hypoallergenic, and more)
  • A way to find packs across specialist retailers with clearer product identity and pricing signals
  • A calm alternative to supermarket-style pet food search noise

What Specifeed is not

  • Not a pet food manufacturer — we do not produce Specifeed-branded bags
  • Not the SPECIFIC™ diet brand (Dechra / SPECIFIC veterinary nutrition is a different company; we may list their products sold by retailers, as we do other brands)
  • Not a vet or pharmacy — we do not diagnose, prescribe, or authorise prescription diets
  • Not a supermarket catalogue — we prioritise specialist need over mass-market filler

The moment everything changed

The hardest part was not just seeing him uncomfortable. It was the delay between cause and effect. Food reactions in cats can be confusing. A cat can tolerate something for a long time and then, seemingly out of nowhere, develop a sensitivity or allergy. Symptoms can show up through skin, stomach, ears, coat, behaviour, litter tray changes, or a vague sense that something is not right.

Nobody sat me down at the start and said, clearly and loudly: food can be the trigger, and it can become the trigger long after your cat first starts eating it. I had to find that out through research, pattern-spotting, and the slow, sickening feeling that I had been missing a piece of the puzzle.

Specifeed is not here to replace vets. It is here because owners deserve better tools between vet visits, better search, clearer labels, and a faster route to the specialist diets that are often hidden behind generic pet food categories.

Pet-first, always

Specifeed is built for the animal at the centre of the worry: the cat scratching raw, the dog with gut pain, the senior pet on a renal diet, the owner trying not to miss something obvious.

No noisy supermarket aisle

The point is focus. We prioritise veterinary, hydrolysed, hypoallergenic, limited ingredient, urinary, renal, gastrointestinal, and other specialist diets instead of burying them under mass-market food.

Search that respects panic

When your pet is unwell, you do not need twenty tabs, vague filters, or marketing copy. You need ingredients, stock, diet type, prescription notes, and prices in one calm place.

What I want every cat owner to know

Food sensitivities can appear after months or years, not only when a food is new.

Chicken, beef, fish, dairy, grains, and additives can all be worth discussing with a vet if symptoms persist.

Hydrolysed diets, novel proteins, and elimination diets are different tools, not interchangeable buzzwords.

Prescription diets can be essential, but owners still need help finding stock, prices, and retailer requirements.

If your gut says the pattern matters, write it down. Dates, foods, symptoms, and changes can help your vet.

Owner guilt is real. But once you know more, you can act with more confidence and more kindness.

The mission

Specifeed is being built into a specialist search engine for pet food that cares about dietary need, not just popularity. It should help owners find suitable food faster, compare retailers more honestly, avoid unsuitable mass-market products, and arrive at their next vet conversation better prepared.
