The label distinction
FEDIAF describes complete food as providing the nutrients a pet requires each day when fed as instructed. Complementary food is intended to be combined with something else or used as a snack, treat or mixer.
Why it matters in a comparison
A complementary topper or treat should not silently replace a complete main diet. Check the feeding instructions, species, life stage and the current label before building a daily routine.
Read the feeding category before comparing two prices
Start with the words complete or complementary, then check the stated species and life stage. A complete adult cat food and a complementary chicken topper are not competing main meals simply because both arrive in 85g pouches. Compare the role each food is intended to play before calculating cost.
Look for composition, analytical constituents and feeding directions on the current label. A retailer’s picture may show an older pack or a different flavour; use the manufacturer’s current information when the text and image disagree. Missing information in a comparison catalogue is an unresolved gap, not a negative ingredient claim.
A label-reading exercise
Imagine two fictional products: A is labelled complete food for adult cats; B is labelled complementary chicken fillets for cats. Before asking which is cheaper, ask what will make up the cat’s main diet and how B is intended to be used. B’s high meat percentage does not answer whether it supplies a complete daily diet. Keep B in a separate topper or treat comparison if that is its stated role.
