Allergy, intolerance and sensitivity are not interchangeable
Skin, ear and gastrointestinal signs can have many causes. A product described as hypoallergenic may be useful in some plans, but the label does not diagnose the cause of symptoms.
A controlled trial needs control
A vet may recommend a hydrolysed or novel-protein diet and a defined trial period. Treats, chews, supplements and flavoured medicines may matter too, so ask what is allowed before you start.
Prepare a feeding history before shopping
Create a list of the foods, flavours, treats, chews and supplements your pet has received, with dates where you know them. Include foods given by other household members. Mark uncertain details as uncertain instead of reconstructing an ingredient list from memory. This record helps your vet decide what to investigate; it does not diagnose an allergy.
Ask the clinic to write down the exact trial food, what else is permitted, the intended duration and how progress will be assessed. Keep those instructions beside your retailer shortlist so an attractive offer does not change the trial unintentionally.
Handle stock gaps without losing the plan
Keep the full product name, recipe and pack size in your saved shopping record. When stock runs low, compare retailers selling that exact food. A hypoallergenic food, a novel-protein food and a hydrolysed food are not automatically interchangeable. If none of the approved options is available, ask your vet for an alternative before switching.
- Record accidental foods or unplanned changes and tell your vet.
- Do not use a missing catalogue ingredient as proof that a food excludes it.
- Ask how any later food challenge should be supervised; do not improvise one from shopping results.
